1. a) a case made of metal, plastic, or cardboard for holding gunpowder and a bullet or shot. Cartridges for blank guns do not contain bullets. b) a case for any explosive charge, especially one to be used for blasting.
2. any one of various containers: »

a filter cartridge, an ink cartridge for a fountain pen.

3. Photography. a) a small container holding a roll of photographic film. b) a roll of photographic film.
4. a unit holding the needle in the pickup of a phonograph.
